Tuesday 3/22/05 - Friday 3/25/05

Tuesday was a great day.  Todd, who lives across from me in one of the cottages, made spaghetti for Isabelle's birthday party.  Isabelle and Buddy are the owners of a jewelry store in Hanapepe just in front of our places.  I had met Buddy a few days before but not Isabelle.  Todd and I carried out the food around noon.  Everyone was out front of their store on chairs, stools, etc. Some were all dressed up in picture hats to celebrate.  I met everyone, sat around and ate spaghetti, drank wine, and generally just had a great time.  There were about 7 or 8 of us at any one time as different people stopped by and had drinks and visited.  As time flies around here the next thing I realized it was 5pm and I was totally worn out.  Buddy and Isabelle invited me to their place, in Kekaha, on Sunday for a special Easter Luau.  They live across the street from the beach so we'll do swimming also.  We'll go around 4pm.  Todd is bringing fish that he has caught with special stuffing to put on the grill and I'm taking a fruit tray.  I'm really looking forward to going as everyone was really nice at the birthday party and I know I'll enjoy myself.   This luau will have the pig (No-Imu Kalua Pig) and all so the food will be amazing I'm sure.

Wednesday was a work day....

Today, Thursday, was a good day.  I worked most all day.  I just got back from my SANS security class which is always great.  For you techies out there we did a special lab on Tuesday where we installed WinDump and Ethereal with test data.  We worked all evening on reading the packets.  Tonight we talked about Attack Strategies and Mitigation; and then Firewalls and Honeypots.  It was very enlightening.

So yesterday I got a voicemail from Paul (my younger brother) about his next trips.  He was planning on stopping by to see me in May but instead invited me to meet him on his next trip.  So, guess what???????  I'm going to Hong Kong in May!  I found a ticket for less than 550 so I'm going for about 3 days and meet with Paul.  Won't that be great?  I have never even thought about going to China before but from here it is only 10 hours.  Very exciting.  I am going to have to really read up as I told Paul it was never a place I thought I would go. It was just so far I never thought about it.  I'll be burning up Google before then to read about everything.  Paul will have a room so it will be a very inexpensive trip for me.  What an opportunity!  He said we would even take the ferry to the mainland so that sounds great.  So funny when he started listing where he was going... here is an excerpt of my choices:

I think this will work very well, if you can do it. You have to give me a few weeks to put it all together, but I think I will fly from Cincinnati on the 13th of May, and arrive the evening of the 14th in Hong Kong. I would then have Sunday and all day Monday for sightseeing, and I would then have to work on Monday night and Tuesday. (Option A from here) I would then leave for Singapore Tuesday night, and have a half day of work in Singapore (or maybe the whole day) and have the evening and the next day free (or mostly free). Then I will go on to Perth, Australia, and then Sydney and then Auckland, New Zealand, and then home. (Option B) Alternatively, I may go west from Perth to Johannesburg, and then Sao Paulo and Buenos Aires, Bogota, and then home. I haven't worked that out, yet.

Busy little bee isn't he?  So, then he tells me to maybe even add in another location but I decided to just do the one to make it easy and I'm sure that will be fun.  So, Hong Kong Here I Come!  Thanks Paul, this will be great!  I'm thinking... on his next trip to Australia I may try to bum again as that was very tempting. Some new pictures

Friday 3/25/05 - Today I finally got a chance to take the free Lei making class offered in Waimea every Friday at the visitors center.  There were about 19 people and it was great fun.  We started out making a paper Leis and then pasta Leis and then the flower Lei.  After we did that the teacher showed us two displays in the center.  One was the Poi where she had cooked some corms and then mashed them in preparation to cook a coconut pudding or other things.  It was very yummy.  The next was about the Salt making.  The Salt Pond where I went last week to snorkel has salt flats in preparation for the summer harvest.  I saw them and had read quite a bit about them.  Her family has farmed the salt for many generations.   No other island farms salt except Kauai.
