Wednesday 6/15 - Friday 6/24

Not much going on lately.  I have just been enjoying the month off from teaching.  I did go on a hike today with Ralph, the property manger here, and Carol, my landlady.  We went up at the end of the road in search of a waterfall I have been wanting to go to.  Ralph and Carol had told me, at our get together at Gayle's the other night, that they had tried to find it also.  So, Ralph looked it up in a book he had and we went to look for an unnamed waterfall and the one I had read about called Ho'opii Falls.  It was a moderate hike with a couple of really tough hills but it was perfect.  We left at 8 and returned around 12.  The worst part is I sent my camera to Sony last Tuesday for repair, so no pictures.  The best part?  That it was so close I will definitely go again and also spend some more time exploring the river and the several falls.  But number one on my list is to check out all of the beautiful plants so I'll do pictures another time for everyone.  The forest was amazing with several different kinds of ferns, philodendrons, vines, and ginger.  There was passion fruit, known here as Lilikoi, which grows in abundance on Kauai.  Here is a picture from the internet of it with a story about it.  I ate one but couldn't get Ralph or Carol to touch it. I had eaten it when we went on the kayak trip last year but couldn't remember the name at all so had to look it up.

Passion fruit (Passiflora edulis), an exotic, tendril-bearing vine native to Brazil. It grows luxuriantly in the Hawaiian islands and the fruit is used for juices and fruit punches, such as Hawaiian Punch®. The fruit on Kauai is golden and is generously punctuated with tiny, edible black seeds. The flavor is seductively sweet-tart and the fragrance tropical. It's a bit drippy LOL. DW

A. Corona

B. Anther

C. Style

D. Sepal

E. Petal

The remarkable floral morphology of the blossom has been associated with the crucifixion of Christ:

A. The fringed corona or crown represents radiant light surrounding Christ's head;

B. The five stamens (with five versatile anthers) represent five wounds;

C. The three styles represent the three nails;

D. & E. The five sepals; and five petals represent ten of the disciples (since St. Peter denied his faith and Judas betrayed Christ, they weren't counted); the flower lasts for three days, the time between the crucifixion and resurrection. [Note: Some references state that the three styles represent a sign of the holy trinity, and the fringed corona symbolizes the crown of thorns.] http://waynesword.palomar.edu/ecoph14.htm
