The islands of Hawaii were created when an enormous fissure on the bed of the Pacific Ocean formed what is known today as the Hawaiian Ridge. Six major islands (Kauai, Oahu, Molokai, Lanai, Maui and the Big Island, moving clockwise from the Westernmost island) make up the above-water tip of that ridge: a verdant, volcanic, vacation haven that attracted 6.9 million tourist visits in 2004.
